Bonnie’s Book Escape

Beating Boredom with Books

As each day got longer and lonelier during the Covid-19 crisis, I found the need to reach out in new ways to give my mind a break from the realities of life, notably, continuous, endless bad news reports, in order to cope and find relevance in life.

I can only exercise for so long each day. There are only so many drawers I can clean, so many recipes I want to try, and movies I want to stream. If you have made a commitment, as I have, to self isolating until we have a safe and reliable vaccine, then we may need to try something fresh and new.

This venture for me is into audiobooks. As much as I love to read the written word, I realize my poor, tired eyes are not as well-equipped to concentrate for long periods of time. When I put a book down too often I find other things to do and the book becomes a chore to get back into. The answer, for me, is audiobooks! What delights me about audiobooks is the performance by narrators has over time become a cottage industry in itself. The narrators take on different voices, accents, and language skills, coupled with acting skills that brings the book to life and sometimes helps clarify the story.

Audiobooks also frees me to do other things while enjoying the book. Earbuds and air pods allow me to multitask while reading. I can exercise, cook, clean house or garage, do a puzzle or online game, or just rest and listen instead of an afternoon nap while reading. It is also a cure for my all too occasional bouts of insomnia. I keep my phone and air pods close to my bed and after a good try at falling back asleep, which happens all too often these days, I listen to an audiobook with the timer in place, set for 30-60 minutes. Unless I have an action packed book I usually fall asleep within that 60 minutes.

When I discovered my library offers the Libby App my choices became practically limitless. And the best thing is it is FREE! Some libraries have other Audio apps. If none are available to you there are other ways to download either the audiobooks or the written page such as Amazon Prime and Audible. But check out the free apps first because once you get hooked there is no going back.

I urge everyone who is feeling low or depressed or interested, to join in the journey to experience, via books, the world in our mind’s eye. I hope we can become an interactive group, sharing titles, opinions and new ideas for exploring topics we my not have done on our own. If you like this idea, please “like”!! To “Follow” my updates scroll way down to the bottom of the page and add your email (I promise I will not sell) so updates will appear in your mailbox. Suggestions and comments are always welcome!
